It's Ash Wednesday- Welcome to Lent

by - Wednesday, February 13, 2013

I may be the only person who gets genuinely excited for the season of Lent, because it is kind of a downer (when you kick off on Ash Wednesday, its all about how we are from the dust and someday we'll be dust again and so forth), but I love the season of Lent. I grew up in a church that didn't do the whole Lent schpiel, but at some point in high school I started giving things up anyway. Now the Boy (who has an actual Catholic past to justify this) try to give a solid amount of stuff up. This year we are:

1. Giving up chocolate, fried food, and television before 7 PM
2. Going to church every Sunday, which will hopeuflly make up for the month of January where we were always sick. Doing our couples devotionals.

Lent, for me, is about two things- taking away stuff we don't need (to just remember how much we don't need them) and to be more disciplined about the things we do. It's a great reminder that some of the stuff that we feel like we need (for me, my go to comfort food is still the thing I miss most every year) is actually just stuff that we want. It is always a challenge, every year, but it feels like a great challenge. It helps me refocus.

Also, it all ends in Easter, which is the best holiday of all holidays ever.
