Today's Inspiration- Thomas Cole

by - Sunday, June 29, 2014

In the continuing spirit of patriotism, today let's go way back to the Hudson River School and Thomas Cole. I had a professor at Stanford who just loved Thomas Cole, but when he talked about the landscape as he saw it, I felt less inspired and more confounded, whereas everyone else apparently loved the taste of that kool aid. Most days, I would rather be stabbed in the eye than look at landscape painting (blech, just the worst), but I do appreciate that these guys loved the American landscape, particularly in New York State. No matter how you feel about the psychoanalytic possibilities of these paintings (again, blech), you can still appreciate their appreciation for the landscape.
