Today's Inspiration- Americana and Art

I figure the next week and a half, we can work around the theme of America, leading up to the 4th of July. I love this holiday, but it is a really hard one to spend away from home. To celebrate the season, let's look at some quintessentially American art this week. This painting, by Jasper Johns in 1955, plays with and celebrates patriotism and the flag as a super recognizable symbol all at once. It is ambivalent and playful, especially considering it was made in the 50's by someone who was FAR from the paradigmatic "American Man" at that time. He was interested in painting things "the mind already knows" and this symbol is both familiar and slightly off here (he would go on to paint it about 40 times). Still,   If you are talking about Art about Americaness, you have to start here.
