Giotto is best known for taking the first really beautiful steps toward perspective, changing the space of paintings in a way that would fuel all of the Renaissance. Forget Leonardo and Michelangelo and so forth. But his Madonnas are my favorite. Also, who doesn't love a good medieval Jesus, where he looks like a little man, not a baby. She just radiates serenity and sadness all at once. Those halos look like they are radiating messages (and they look a lot less like plates than they do in his other paintings. These sorts of paintings are so perfect this time of year.
