AFI Top 100- Halfway There

by - Saturday, November 02, 2013

I have been trying to get through the AFI Top 100 (though, in truth, my brother has me turned onto the National Film Registry list, so now my total list is up to like 700 or something, but I like having a place to start and build from).

Anyway, I have seen 51 of the 100, and generally I find it to be a major usage fest. Just dudes everywhere. Of the 51 (and let's be honest, I aimed for the girlier ones first),  11 pass the Bechdel test. Let that sink in for a second. And that, in a lot of cases, is being very generous  (they aren't talking about a man, but men in general, that sort of thing). 5 have no female characters at all.

Of the 51 I have seen, I have really liked about 30 of them, so that isn't bad right? I can call myself AFI-approved? On the other hand, if I never have to see Grapes of Wrath, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, or Chinatown again, that will be soon enough, so they can't all be winners.

This is the list of what's left:
Citizen Kane
Raging Bull
Lawrence of Arabia (my brother loved this one- if you know there are any gems left here, feel free to point them out)
Schindler's List
City Lights
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (The Boy says we watched this in high school, but I don't remember it)
The Maltese Falcon
Godfather Part II
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (I have seen this in chunks on tv, but never start to finish)
The Bridge on the River Kwai (Ron Swanson approved)
The Best Years of Our Lives
A Streetcar Named Desire
Rear Window
West Side Story
Taxi Driver
The Deer Hunter
The Gold Rush
Sullivan't Travels
American Graffiti
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf
A Clockwork Orange
Saving Private Ryan
The Shawshank Redemption (Why is this never on tv now that I actually want to watch it?)
Silence of the Lambs
In the Heat of the Night
All the President's Men
Modern Times
The Wild Bunch
The Apartment
Easy Rider
A Night at the Opera
Sophie's Choice
The French Connection
The Last Picture Show
Yankee Doodle Dandy

Ugh, so I am sure I will love a bunch of these, but it seems like a lot of boys to me. A lot. The only one I am really looking forward to is Tootsie, because PAG says that is the bomb.
