Halloween Decorating Ideas

by - Wednesday, October 10, 2012

It's that time where the apple decorations come down and our Halloween stuff goes up. In comparison to most holidays, we don't do much for Halloween, but I think it would be fun to add a little more and have been poking around for ideas. This is most of what we have, which is either from impulse buys at craft stores or stuff my dad sent us:

Halloween decorating, in some ways, is the trickiest because I don't actually want things to look scary. I can think of a lot of ways to reflect on mortality, I have never found intentionally inducing fear that effective. But I do think there are lots of cute options now, hopefully some of which I can make myself.

Here are a few of the Pinterest Ideas I really want to try. (I am not listing their links, because they are all easily found on Pinterest, and some of their links didn't lead anywhere anyway):

Candy corn wall hanging- So cute! The candy corn decorations definitely side step the spooky stuff, but the ravens work as a reminder that the this is for a scary holiday!

Love this one- I think we could actually do something in this vein, and I love that the centerpiece is sort of cliche white sheet ghosts. It really works with the more odd things around it. I think this is my end game for the dining room, but I think it will take me a lot of years to accumulate that kind of stuff. You don't want to rush (or spend too much of your income) on these things!

Simple, easy- Hot glue dollar store snakes to a wreath and paint it all black. Halloween wreaths are really the best.  The other one is supposedly a dollar store skeleton dismembered and reassembled. I have suspicions on that, or at the least they did some sort of painting/texturing on it.

Ok, the hand ice cube is more party decor than house decor, but I love it. I think the combo of that with the googly eye cups is really fun!

Pumpkin Bats- Awesome. Whoever thought of this is awesome. This one really does seem doable. Maybe I will try it and write a post about how it goes.

Love this card! Was thinking you could do the same thing as a picture frame for the spooky picture wall.

There are some things coming up on Etsy that I really love too. Etsy really has the best stuff.

As I already said, I am getting more and more obsessed with Day of the Dead sugar skulls, so I looked around a lot for Halloween decorations in that style. This garland from the Doll City Rocker ( http://www.etsy.com/listing/87111781/halloween-decorations-bunting-sugar?ref=usr_faveitems) is both edgy and super cute. I love it!

I really would like to do some sort of spooky photo wall in the dining room over Jimmy Buffet, and you can find all sorts of creepy photographs like this one for sale on Etsy without getting into actual death portraits (oh yeah, one of the first real trends in photography.. look it up!)- you can find this one at-  http://www.etsy.com/listing/79115875/halloween-decoration-creepy-girl-with?image_id=336205152.

This is my absolute favorite; if it hadn't sold already, I probably would have bought it. You can buy vinyl decals (like our wedding bathroom doors) of pretty much any strange thing on Etsy, but these packs of flying bats really create a big impact for relatively little dough. This would be super scary to my dad, but I think they are still riding that scary/ cute line. You can find other decals here-  http://www.etsy.com/listing/83131192/halloween-decoration-vinyl-wall-decals?ref=usr_faveitems

Another take on the bat decor- I love these circle garlands, but I have never learned how to make them. I need to, because this is so simple, but it is really nice. Much more on the cute side, but I think that is what we're going for. Find it here-  http://www.etsy.com/listing/104558872/orange-and-black-halloween-garland?ref=usr_faveitems

I am obsessed with these gothic dolls- they look like the Quay Brothers and Tim Burton had these creepy graphic babies. The dolls themselves are pretty dang expensive (and rightfully so, because they are so beautiful) but you can also get prints (maybe for my creepy wall?). You can find these loopyboopy beauties here- http://www.etsy.com/shop/loopyboopy?ref=seller_info_count
Another Sugar Skull decoation- I love the cut paper. It looks like something you could do yourself (like a paper snowflake) but one look at the circles and I know I am out of my league. Wondering if you could make them on one of those Cricut things. Still, super cute. Find them here- http://www.etsy.com/listing/107253621/halloween-decorations-art-sculpture?ref=usr_faveitems
