3 Things I Love Today

1. Watermelon Granita- We watched my cousin Natalie make this while we were home, and we really wanted to try it! We started this process last night, and we have a really great/ not too bad for us treat today! This is a perfect summer treat, kind of like a snow cone made of fruit. Also, I am no cook, but I could even do this myself, so if you are the dessert person in your house, like me, this is one to try. Here is the recipe:

You will need:
         1 cup sugar
        3/4 cup water
about 5 lbs worth of watermelon, cut into bite size pieces
         2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

1. In a 2 quart saucepan, combine sugar and water; heat to boiling at high heat, stirring until sugar has dissolved. Reduce heat to medium and cook for 1 minute. Set saucepan in bowl of ice water until syrup is cool.

2. Meanwhile, puree the watermelon chunk in a blender or with a mixer until they are smooth (basically anything that will turn it into watermelon mush will work). With spoon, press watermelon puree through a sieve into a large bowl. Try to discard fibers and seeds.

3. Stir the syrup into the puree; pour it into a 9 inch square pan (we used a glass one). Cover and freeze for 2 hours. I would suggest now that we've tried it, that you pull it out an hour or so in and rake it through with a fork. It will help it not be one mass when it is time to serve it.

Also, this makes a lot (like 9 cups), so if you went for a half serving, I certainly wouldn't judge you. Still, all in all, I would label this one as a very refreshing win!

2. Our new lamp! The Boy's friend Richie made us this amazing lamp as a wedding gift- we got it yesterday and put it together tonight. It is so beautiful. A little bit deco and a little steampunk, it is a hardcore Etsier's dream lamp. I am obsessed with its ridiculous amazingness. It feels like one of those things we will have forever, and it is even more amazing because he made it himself. You have to feel lucky to have friends like these! The one on the right is the picture of the day, but I think I may be deciding that this mission could end up being too much information that nobody cares about.

3. Being John Malkovich- Watched this movie this afternoon while I was trying to edit our thousand some wedding pictures (finished all the ones we have so far!). It really stands up, and it is as weird, smart, and just fun as any movie I can think of ever. I love love love Charlie Kaufman. And John Malkovich gives one of the weirdest and most amazing performances ever in this movie.

It also boasts really strange and wonderful performances from both of its female leads- Catherine Keener and (probably my favorite performance from her ever) Cameron Diaz (in fact, it is kind of odd how narratively superfluous the seeming protagonist of this story ends up being. He is sort of the catalyst and nothing else, which is part of what keeps the story so fresh and unpredictable). This movie has all sorts of weird gender politics going on as well, though I think the potential of that is not totally realized.

Anyway, this movie is awesome. Not my favorite Kaufman movie, but in the top 3! And definitely the most fun while maintaining a philosophical perspective.

Bonus: This beautiful picture of two VERY beautiful women! So, my phone seems to have really died this time, but the boy revived it just long enough for me to get this picture from my Mom. I just think they both look so pretty and I hope they were happy to be spending time together!
