The Whiplash

I saw that Penn Gillette, of all people, quoted this on his twitter today, and I think it perfectly articulates my anxiety about being too enthusiasticly joyful about the death of Osama Bin Laden. I'm not ashamed of that, and more than anything I am fascinated about how this victory has incited so much rememorializing and revisiting of memory through photograph and film. Anyway, leave it to MLK to remind us of a (hopefully) higher standard:

"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that" - Martin Luther King Jr.
