So the point of this blog was to try to counter all the intellectual stuffiness that grad school basically requires. I need a break from talking about things that are "interesting" and talk about things I just think are awesome. Sadly, during the year, it is sooo hard to keep the blog up, because I feel like I barely have time for the interesting parts!
My hope is that I can get on top of things this summer, building a habit of just having fun writing and thinking and talking about culture and just stuff that I love.
So, to kick it off, Nick and I drove down to LA this weekend to visit my brother Thomas. I love love love the cheesiness of LA. I feel like it is a giant casting (and clothing) ground for the next season of Rock of Love. Though the city can be kind of creepy, especially in the super dramatic commercialization of everything, but that makes it seem more honest. It is America at its most exposed, most commercial, and most shiny, but I kind of like that.
We did all the normal cheesy LA sights- the Chinese theater, the walk of Fame, Scientology centers- but my favorite was Madame Tussaud's wax museum.
The boys had a great time posing with all of the celebrities- I just love activities where taking pictures is the most fun part. I can go crazy trying to get people excited about pictures like I am, but there is nothing like a little silliness to get things started! I am not even sure the appeal was the celebrities, in a weird way. The celebrities only seem to add to the silliness, setting up obvious meanings to play off of and juxtapose against. In my John Wayne class, we talked about setting up an icon, or a body taking on many meanings. It's amazing what a vocabulary of meanings we have now- every celebrity has their own little set of meanings to play with, which have nothing to do with their career in film. It's totally constructed, but also totally honest. I mean, I realize more and more that most people accrue meanings for those around them, and that often turns into caricature. Any way, the real point of this is that posing with random wax figures hilarious and also very very creepy.
Also, did I mention funny costumes? Because nothing speaks of a good time like the threat of lice. Yay Wax celebrities! Yay Summer! More randomness to come (I hope!).
